The Confined

Original title: Antareen
Mrinal Sen/ India/ Bengali/ 1993/ color/ 91 minutes

The film inspired by the short story Antareen written by Urdu writer Saadat Hasan Manto. The film is about the lives of two strangers (one man and woman) as their relationship unfolds, having never met, and talking only on the telephone. The man is a young writer. He stays temporarily all alone in his friend’s decrepit mansion. The other one is a rejected woman. She is reaching out nightly to strangers on the phone, because her life is so out of control. She attempts to maintain control of their relationship by phoning him only at her pleasure. She calls him several times. As their conversions continue there are subtle yet perverse changes in both of them, as he loses his cynicism of her, and she her aloofness with him.
